So Cliché

A woman in a floral skirt in the summer—so cliché, I know. But pair it with this Helmut Lang wonder of a vest with white leather piping, and it takes on a whole new life. A much needed new life too, since it has been residing in the dark corners of my closet for over six years now.

But I digress. Surely you can tell that the vest’s asymmetric lapels and unfinished hems take my little monochromatic hip-hugger from ‘soft and feminine’ to ‘unexpectedly chic,’ can you not?

Pretty Woman-ish

Dressing for work has been utterly painful lately—I was stuck at the corner of “lack of inspiration” and “scorching DC heat meets overly air conditioned office.”

And then I saw these Pretty Woman reminiscent linen shorts [think Vivian’s red short suit paired with a white blouse], and I leaped into a mental somersault at the thought of channeling my inner Julia Roberts. What followed was a sly smirk over the work-appropriateness [it’s a real word, I promise] of all of this.

In an effort to not lose too much of myself, I kept to my own proclivities by pairing the short with a crisp, white button down that I recently snagged from Zara Man.

Yes, I do that often—shop the men’s section at my favorite retailers, that is— and I love it.

La blouse roumaine

In my perfect little crazy universe, summer essentials are light, and flowy, and barely there, but not too revealing all at the same time. Tall order, I know, but every now and then a little something comes along that makes all my wishes come true.

And this little something, aka the hand embroidered off the shoulder bohemian blouse, came to me straight from my [Romanian] motherland. And yes, the likes of Planet Blue and Free People could have easily placated my desire for an embroidered tunic. However, wearing the popular attire of my ancestors as made by the hands of artisans from my home country just makes my heart tickle a little bit more.

Can’t you tell?
